The Fast and Furious franchise has been around now 18 years and with 8 films(soon to be a 9th) this series that started out about street racers made a drastic swift some away from that and took on a new life as each film got bigger, and more action filled.

We first were introduced too Luke Hobbs in Fast Five(Johnson) who came in as the villain trying to bring down the team, but he quickly became a fan favorite because afterall it is Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock playing the role and who doesn’t love The Rock…

Deckard Shaw(Statham) we first meet in a post scene credit of Fast 6 as the guy who killed Han in Tokyo, and Than in Fast 7 we find out he is the older brother of Owen Shaw(Luke Evans) from Part 6 and he wants all kinds of revenge on the people who almost killed his brother.

Fastforward too how Hobbs and Shaw became a duo is basically Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham has crazy chemistry which we get to see bits of in Fast 7 and Fast 8 so why not put these two in their own movie, I mean I don’t know anybody that would have a problem with that…

This first spin off of the Franchise directed by David Leitch(Deadpool series) forces our new favorite odd couple together so that they can save the world from a deadly virus and also stop the new bad guy Brixton(Idris Elba) aka Black Superman…sounds like a piece of cake. Right?

Hobbs and Shaw feels like a throwback too buddy action films from the 80s/90s but with a new age feel.

Johnson and Statham play off of each other very well and it comes across on screen as the two trade off insults and always trying to one up each other and ever turn.

Things gets even more tense once Haddie(Vanessa Kirby) joins into the mix not only as a key too whats going on but as Deckard’s sister who is just as rough and tough as her brother but unlike Deckard she actually likes Hobbs, which adds for some funny moments between the three.

Kirby who is best known for her role on Netflix’s The Crown here she brings her A game and could have easily been played as a damsel in distress but because she is a Shaw she gives it just as well as the men and keeps up when the two guys go back and forth on each other and adds balance to their craziness.

Another new comer too this Fast and Furious world Idris Elba as the superhuman “Bad Guy” Brixton is really good in his role as he isn’t your typical bad guy and In an a different life he could have probably been fighting with Hobbs and Shaw oppose against them, he brings his own twisted humor and gives alot of the fight too Hobbs and Shaw a few times through out the movie. a point in the movie you could actually find yourself agreeing with his point of view.

In true Fast and Furious fashion the theme of family is very much present here and not just that of Deckard and Haddie, but the relationship they have with their mother Queenie(Helen Mirren) who we fast saw in Fast 8 she returns here to add more too why the Shaw family are the way they are and Helen Mirren just makes everything better.

We also get a lot of backstory about Hobbs and his family as well, and get to see Samoa, which is a amazing looking place, even though this is an over the top action movie but the family moments through out help ground it because its something that we all can relate too one way or another.

….Speaking of the action this movie does not disappoint in that department as we get some crazy action scenes through out a few notable being a car chase through the streets of London with an Mcaleren and Brixton and his transformer self driving motorcycle, and another one where Hobbs does his best Captain America with a helicopter while hanging on the back of a tow truck.

The movie is filled with a bit of everything and all the elements of what makes the Fast and Furious franchise entertaining and more, also there are a few cameos here that add too the funny I won’t say who they are but when you see them you’ll know and they add take anything away from the movie actually adds to what make this movie so fun and entertaining.

My Rating: 4/5
